Periodontics Hamilton FAQ

What Is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dental specialist who diagnoses and treats conditions of the gums and the bone that supports your teeth, and who places dental implants. After dental school, periodontists complete three additional years of specialty training focused on the hard and soft tissues that form the foundation for healthy teeth and implants. If your dentist has referred you to a periodontist, it’s because your care calls for that specialist expertise.

What Is LANAP? Is It Different Than Laser Gum Surgery?

Laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) is a revolutionary approach in periodontal surgery, utilizing laser technology to treat gum disease with precision and minimal discomfort. Unlike traditional surgical procedures that require cutting and suturing, LANAP surgery employs a specialized laser to selectively remove diseased tissue while preserving healthy gum tissue, making it relatively pain free. Laser gum surgery significantly reduces trauma to the gums, leading to a quicker and more comfortable recovery process. Laser gum treatment’s precision also minimizes the risk of infection and reduces bleeding and swelling, shortening recovery times.

LANAP stimulates the regeneration of bone and connective tissue around teeth, which can halt the progression of gum disease and potentially prevent tooth loss. This advanced technique is transforming periodontal therapy by offering a less invasive, more effective treatment option, making it a superior choice for many patients suffering from periodontal disease. It can also be used to treat gummy smiles, receding gum issues, and other oral health/cosmetic issues.

What Is LAPIP?

Laser-Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure (LAPIP) is a cutting-edge technique used to treat peri-implantitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and infection around dental implants. Similar to LANAP, LAPIP uses a specialized dental laser to target and eliminate infected tissue around the implant, leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This targeted approach allows for the precise removal of harmful bacteria and diseased tissue. And like LANAP, it is similarly non-invasive – no cutting or suturing required. That means less discomfort, reduced bleeding, and a quicker recovery time for patients.

LAPIP helps preserve existing implants, maintaining the structural integrity of the patient’s jawbone and dental framework, potentially preempting the need for an expensive dental replacement. By promoting the regeneration of bone and soft tissue around the implant, LAPIP helps in sustaining the longevity and functionality of the dental implant.

What Is Periodontics?

A periodontics treatment can provide you, the patient:

  • Gum graft surgery
  • Regenerative procedures
  • Dental crown lengthening
  • Periodontal pocket procedures

Non-surgical treatments

  • Scaling and root planing
  • Laser treatment

  • Endosteal (in the bone)
  • Subperiosteal (on the bone)
  • Single tooth dental implants
  • Multiple tooth dental implants

Periodontist Vs Dentist

While a common question, this isn’t exactly the best framing because a periodontist is a dentist, only with extra training and specializations.

Think of it as the difference between a general practitioner physician and a neurologist – both are medical doctors, but one has increased training and knowledge in a particular field.

Both dentists and periodontists are integral to maintaining and improving your oral health, but they have different focuses and will address different issues – although there can be some overlap with certain treatments.

Should I See a Periodontist?

See a periodontist if you notice bleeding or receding gums, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, or gum pain — or if your dentist has found deep gum pockets or bone loss on an X-ray. You should also see a periodontist if you’re considering dental implants, or if you have an existing implant that feels sore or inflamed. Many patients are referred by their dentist, but you can also contact our Hamilton clinic directly to arrange a consultation.

Do you place dental implants in Hamilton?

Yes –  implant placement is one of our core specialties. Dr. Michael Glogauer has placed over 15,000 implants during 25+ years as a periodontist, from single-tooth replacements to full-arch restorations, all performed at our clinic at 460 Main St E. As periodontists, we also handle the cases general dental clinics often refer out, including patients with significant bone loss. Learn more on our dental implant page.

How much do dental implants cost in Hamilton?

The final figure depends on how many implants you need and whether bone grafting is required. You’ll receive a written estimate before any treatment begins. See our full cost breakdown on the dental implant page.

Why choose a periodontist for implants instead of a general dentist?

Periodontists complete three extra years of surgical specialty training focused on the gums and jawbone — exactly the tissues an implant depends on. That training matters most when things aren’t simple: insufficient bone, gum disease, or a previous implant that failed. It’s also why dentists refer their complex implant cases to us. Read more about our approach to implant treatment.

Can I get a dental implant in one day?

Often, yes. Our Tooth in a Day service replaces a single missing tooth in one visit, and Teeth in a Day restores a full arch the same day, using digital planning and on-site CBCT imaging. Not every case qualifies — bone quality and gum health decide – so we confirm your eligibility at a consultation. See our Tooth in a Day and Teeth in a Day pages for details.

I’ve been told I don’t have enough bone for implants. Can you help?

Usually, yes – this is our specialty. Bone grafting, bone regeneration, and sinus augmentation can rebuild the foundation an implant needs, and Dr. Glogauer’s university research focuses on improving bone before implant placement. If another clinic has turned you away, book a consultation before assuming implants aren’t an option.
