There are many conditions of the innner lining of your mouth that are not caused by infections but instead are immunological disorders that can cause ulcers (literally small holes) to form in the inner lining of the gum or the mucous membranes of your mouth. Sometimes, these oral mucosal diseases can flare up very quickly. If this happens, you may experience a burning sensation which is very uncomfortable. It is important to be able to recognize the difference between an acute flare-up of an oral mucosal disease and to differentiate it from a bacterial infection, since the treatments are completely different and incorrect therapy can cause significant problems.
